LAKELAND | South Sumter was determined not to give Kathleen anything big Friday night.

So quarterback Isaac O'Neal took enough little things to keep the fifth-ranked Red Devils undefeated in a 35-15 victory at Johnny Johnson Stadium.

Throwing underneath the stretched-out Raider defense, O'Neal completed 10 of his first 11 passes and threw for 229 yards in the first half.

"Isaac loves to go for the gusto a lot," explained Kathleen coach Irving Strickland. "Tonight I told him if they're giving you everything underneath, take it. That's what worked for us tonight."

Brayun Andrews caught 12 of O'Neal's passes for 180 yards and ran for two Kathleen touchdowns. Terry Bentley also scored twice for the Red Devils (7-0).

Played before a crowd of about 1,000, the game ended when South Sumter guard Ethan Stephens broke his leg with 53 seconds on the clock.

South Sumter (2-5) scored first with the help of Ian Papenheim's 54-yard completion to Dalton Hofecker. But the Raiders managed only 128 yards and six first downs the rest of the game.

"They might be the best team on our schedule," said South Sumter coach Inman Sherman. "Defensively they're very goood and of course we're not very good offensively. That's a bad combination."

Kathleen plays at home against Class 4A-8 rival Ridge Community next week.
