EAGLE LAKE | For the second week in a row, Kathleen's strong running game sparked a 33-0 victory over Lake Region in a Class 4A-8 district game at the Field of Thunder before about 800 fans.

This week, it was Terry Bentley who jump-started the attack. He finished with 86 yards on 10 carries including a 46-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave the Red Devils (2-0, 1-0) their first score.

As a team, Kathleen finished with 186 yards on 29 carries with rushing touchdowns by quarterback Isaac O'Neal, and running backs Javier Maturin and Victory McClendon.

"That was a big goal in the offseason," Kathleen Irving Strickland said. "We wanted to be more physical and run the football. They dedicated themselves to the weight room in the offseason, and it showed."

Unlike last season, O'Neal's passing attack played just a supporting role. O'Neal completed 5 of 9 passes for 78, but he made his presence felt. His 33-yard pass to Marcus Cunningham early in the third quarter put Kathleen up 19-0.

It was another rain- and lighting-delayed game. After Bentley's first-quarter touchdown run, the game was delayed for about an hour.

Quarterback Tavaris Carr finished with 56 yards of Lake Region's 70 yards rushing and also was 6-of-10 passing for 92 yards but threw two interceptions in the second half.

Next Friday, Lake Region is at home against Sebring, while Kathleen plays at Auburndale.
